Frequently Asked Questions
Donations, Charities & Causes
- Can I support multiple causes at the same time?
No. You can be signed up for only one cause at a time. We know what you’re like because you’re just like us. You want to Better The World! You want to help as many causes as you can all at once. We hear you and commend you for that!
By focusing on fewer causes rather than many, we can concentrate our efforts into benefiting select causes more instead of just raising a bit for each. That way the money you raise can have a much greater impact in the field. Choice isn’t easy – especially when there are so many good causes to choose from. Good luck making your decision. Just dig deep and pick a cause you feel passionate about.
- 90% of the money goes to the charity, so where does the other 10% go?
The other 10% goes to Better The World. We are a for-profit company made up of professionals who also happen to be innovators. We have expenses related to making this concept work and we need to earn a living in the process. We feel that a mere 10% of generated funds is very reasonable. Especially when you consider that many of the other websites out there designed to raise money for charities take a 50% cut, and are not always forthcoming with that information. Rather than hiding this, we are choosing to be upfront about it. In return we’ll keep coming up with other innovative ways to Better The World. We promise!
- How do I know that the money will actually make it to my charity?
We have established formal partnerships with a select group of leading global charities. They provide the responses and expertise to implement programs in support of your cause. We are committed to being completely transparent. We’ve hired Deloitte & Touche, a globally recognized auditing firm, to approve and sign off on our annual financial statements to ensure that your money goes exactly where you expect it to go.
- How do I know charities will actually use the money to achieve the goals they set?
The amount of money you will see as the total raised by our member community for a specific cause is accurate and real. The goals being set, as well as the progress made to achieve these goals, are also real. However the idea is to get the money to the charities so that they can use it in whatever way it is most urgently needed in support of your cause.
So sometimes your charity might use the money in other ways besides those we’ve posted as goals.
We’re OK with that because ultimately the true goal here is to make positive change in the world and we believe that your charity is best equipped to know how the money we raise for them can be used most effectively. For instance, we might list a goal for a hospital as “Buy a cast for a child’s broken arm” which is something the hospital will actually do, but if a child comes through the door and needs chemotherapy, we want to give the hospital the flexibility to use the money we raise for the chemotherapy, not the cast.
We will do our best to keep you informed as we learn of other ways the money has been used, so we can all get the kudos we deserve.
Advertisements
- What types of ads will be appearing on the site?
There are 3 different types:
a. Corporate Social Responsibility Program Promotion – ads from corporations who have social responsibility programs that they wish to promote (e.g. Coke’s Every Drop Matters) as well as the positive impact those programs have had,
b. Social Products & Services - ads from corporations who have “social products and services” (e.g. Toyota Prius Hybrid Automobile or GE Energy Smart Compact Florescent Light Bulbs) that they wish to promote,
c. Products and Services that fit with our members - these ads align with our member’s interests (e.g. National Geographic),
d. Not For Profit and Innovation – Organizations that are aligned with the values of our community and are providing programs or services to support those values (e.g. Thousand Villages Retail Store)
- What will my ad experience be like?
Depending on the Better The World tools that you choose to use, your ad experience will be slightly different.
When using the Better The World Browser Sidebar tool, you will see ads in the top portion of the Sidebar tool. You can place the tool on either the left or the right side of your browser by using the settings link at the bottom of the Sidebar. And you can temporarily hide the Sidebar using the little Better The World logo at the bottom of your browser. But don't forget that you won't be raising money for your cause when it's hidden.
For most computer monitors, the Sidebar will take over an unused portion of your screen and will not change your web browsing experience.
You will also encounter ads throughout the Better The World website - these are all raising money for our charity partners too!

- Are you placing cookies on my computer?
Yes, but not the baked-good kind (too bad huh?). Placing these kinds of cookies on your computer is a common practice by any publisher. It happens all the time without you knowing about it. But we want to tell you why we’re doing it. The main reason we’re putting a cookie on your computer is so that we’ll remember you the next time you come back to the site.
Security & Privacy
- What do you do with the registration information?
Programs are about raising money in support of global social issues.
In order to do this we use your information in AGGREGATE to market to prospective advertisers. That means that we never use your SPECIFIC information (your name, address etc.) but rather that we use the information you provide us by grouping our Members.
So for example, a hybrid car company might be interested in reaching 18 – 34 year old women who are interested in Climate Change. We will use the information you provide to us to find this specific group of women from all our Members and then show them advertisements from the hybrid car company. The better the information we have about the audience who will see these ads, the higher the advertising rate a corporation is willing to pay. The more money we can generate from ad sales, the more money that goes to your charity. So giving us this information will really help support your cause.
And you should know… Better The World will NEVER share your personal information with anyone. Please see our
Privacy Policy for more information.
- What is your Privacy Policy?
Better The World is committed to protecting the privacy of our Members. We value the trust that you have placed in us and understand the importance of maintaining this trust. Better The World is committed to being fully accountable and transparent with all our Members, charity partners, advertising partners and other stakeholders. The
Privacy Policy is designed to fully disclose to you how we treat the information that you have chosen to share with us.
