Better The World (BTW) is committed to protecting the privacy of our Members. We value the trust that you have placed in us and understand the importance of maintaining this trust. BTW is committed to being fully accountable and transparent with all our Members, charity partners, advertising partners and other stakeholders. This policy is designed to fully disclose to you how we treat the information that you have chosen to share with us.

In an effort to maximize the positive change we can make in the world by generating revenue for our charity partners, we frequently gather and use Personal Information. BTW complies with the legal requirements of the Canada’s federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. The Personal Information of our Members and partners is always held in the strictest of confidence and any use of this information is subject to consent.

BTW uses Personal and Non-Personal Information for the following general purposes: to customize the advertising and content you see on our pages, to fulfill your requests for certain products and services, improve our services, and to contact you with service announcements or administrative messages relating to the BTW Service.

The BTW Service are hosted in the United States. If you are located outside the United States, you expressly agree that your Personal Information and related data will be transferred to the United States for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy as a result of your using the BTW tools and Services.

The BTW website (http://www.bettertheworld.com) is a general audience site and does not knowingly collect Personal Information or related data from children under 13 years of age.

Personal Information


Personal Information is any information that can be used to distinguish, identify or contact a specific individual. This information can include an individual's name, contact information, opinions, social status and family relationships.

Exceptions include business-related information and certain publicly available information such as business address, name, title and fax. Where an individual uses his or her home contact information as business contact information as well, BTW considers that the contact information provided is business contact information.

Privacy Practices


The privacy of a BTW member’s Personal Information is never compromised. Safeguards are in place to ensure that all Personal Information is kept confidential and secure. Access is only given to employees who must use the Personal Information for the reason for which it was obtained or for the purposes for which you have consented to it’s use.

BTW collects, uses and discloses Personal Information only for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate.

BTW collects your email address, first and last name, postal/ZIP code, gender, and date of birth from you in order to register you as a Member (“Registration Data”). BTW cannot register you as a Member without this information. Once you register with BTW and sign in to our Service, you are not anonymous to us. All other information you provide during registration, or that you post on your personal profile, or that you post on the BTW website is voluntary. BTW may also collect Personal Information from you if you choose to participate in activities like sweepstakes, contests, polls, and surveys, because you want us to furnish you with products, services, newsletters, or information, or in connection with content or suggestions you submit to BTW.

In addition, BTW collects other Related Data and Non-Personal Information including IP address, aggregate user data, and browser type. This data is used to manage and improve the BTW services, track usage on the BTW site, and for security purposes.

BTW Members may also choose to provide or store Non-Personal Information and Related Data in their profiles, including but not limited to interests, blogs, videos and/or pictures, private messages, bulletins or personal statements (collectively “Profile Information”). The Profile Information in a Member’s profile is provided at his or her sole discretion. Please be aware that your Public Profile, as well as any information posted to any public forum, can be accessed by the public. Your Public Profile can be accessed by you at any time. Your Public Profile may be accessed by BTW at all times and, in limited cases, by certain third parties authorized by BTW for purposes of ensuring compliance with BTW’s Terms of Use.

BTW Members can change their Registration Data and Profile Information at any time using the Account Settings portion of the BTW site. You may also request deletion of your Profile by sending an email directly to support [at] bettertheworld.com with “Delete my Profile” in the subject line.

BTW determines the purposes of collection, use and disclosure of the Registration Data you provide and, as such, is considered the data controller of this information.

Information Sharing and Disclosure


BTW will NOT sell or rent your Personal Information to anyone.

BTW will not share Personal Information about you to other companies or people unless:
• We have your consent to share this information;
• We need to share your information to provide the product or service you have requested;
• We need to share the information with companies who work on behalf of BTW to provide a product or service to you. Please know that whenever we share your Personal Information with these trusted business partners, they work under confidentiality agreements. (Unless we tell you differently, these companies do not have any right to use the Personal Information we provide to them beyond what is necessary to assist us.);
• We reasonably believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, or as otherwise required or permitted by law;
• We respond to warrants, subpoenas, court orders or legal process or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims; or
• We find that your actions on our website violate the BTW Terms of Service or any of our usage guidelines for specific services.
• We may transfer information about you if BTW is acquired by or merged with another company. In this event, BTW will notify you before information about you is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Website and Electronic Commerce


Our website is operated by BTW for the benefit of our Members and those interested in supporting BTW, our charity partners and other stakeholders. It is free for use by individual web users. No registration is required.

Registration is required to use the BTW suite of tools and to register and become a member.

BTW maintains reasonable physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your Personal Information. BTW works with vendors and partners to protect the security and privacy of user information. This means that any data sent from the user's computer to BTW is completely secure.

For website users under the age of majority in your place of residence, please be sure to obtain your parent's or guardian's permission before you send any information about yourself (your name, e-mail address, etc.) to us or anyone else over the Internet. We encourage parents to get involved with their children's online usage and to be aware of the activities in which they are participating.

Cookies


Like many other websites, we use cookies to better understand how our site is used, to make sure our information and dynamic content are served correctly, and to improve the performance of our site for our users. BTW does not use cookies to retain Personal Information about our users. Aggregated site usage data may be provided to our partners or advertisers, but we will never share specific information about any member.

Third party advertisements displayed on the BTW Services may also contain cookies set by Internet advertising companies or advertisers (known as “third party cookies”). BTW does not control these third party cookies and users of the BTW Service should check the privacy policy of the Internet advertising company or advertiser to see whether and how it uses cookies. A pixel tag is a tiny image inserted in a webpage and used to record the number and types of views for that page. BTW may allow third party pixel tags to be present on BTW Services for purposes of advertising, providing services or data and statistics collection.

You can program your computer to warn you each time a cookie is being sent, block third party cookies or block all cookies. However, by blocking all cookies you may not have access to certain features on the BTW Service and you will likely limit the amount of money we can generate for your charity and cause.

BTW may use cookies and similar tools to customize the content and advertising you receive based on the Profile Information you have provided. Profile Information you provide in structured profile fields or questions (multiple choice questions like “Gender”, “Children” and “My Top Issues”) (“Structured Profile Information”), information you add to open-ended profile fields and questions (essay questions like “In my better world…,” and “Why I contribute”) (“Non-Structured Profile Information”) and other Non-Personal Information about you may also be used to customize the online ads you encounter to those we believe are aligned with your interests. For example, based on your top world issue interests, like sustainable living, we might display an advertisement to let you know about a new hybrid car. The information used for this feature does not provide your Personal Information or identify you as an individual to third parties, but will involve the processing of certain Non-Personal data such as IP addresses.

Some of the advertisements that appear on the BTW Service may also be delivered to you by third party Internet advertising companies. These companies utilize certain technologies to deliver advertisements and marketing messages and to collect Non-Personal Information about your visit to or use of the BTW Service, including information about the ads they display, via a cookie placed on your computer that reads your IP address. To opt out of information collection by these companies, or to obtain information about the technologies they use or their own privacy policies, you can visit websites such as:

There are links on the BTW website and tools that take you to other websites outside of our Service. Any links provided to third party websites outside of BTW are provided solely for your convenience. We will not be liable under any circumstances for any damages whatsoever, direct or indirect, resulting from any use of the BTW website or any third party website linked to the BTW website, whether or not we are advised of the possibility of such damages.

The BTW website and Service may also carry advertisements from other companies. Once you leave BTW Services via an a link to a third party, access a third party application (such as a widget) or click on an advertisement, you should check the applicable privacy policy of the third party or advertiser site to determine, among other things, how they will handle any Personal Information they collect from you.

We regularly review our privacy practices to ensure that we are not only complying with Canada's federal privacy legislation, but also exceeding it to protect our Members and maintain their trust. We may change this policy from time to time to ensure this standard of compliance is met. Changes will be reflected in this posting. Please check this page periodically for changes. Your continued use of this site following the posting of changes to this policy will mean you accept those changes.
